The Royal Bahamas Defence Force has a Ranger program for high school students. An induction ceremony for 55 new Rangers was held on the freight dock on Marsh Harbour.
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham enjoyed his time at the Island Roots Heritage Festival held on Green Turtle Cay the beginning of May. This annual event draws large crowds who enjoy shows, games, informative talks, genealogical information and lots of good food and drink.
The annual Homer Lowe Regatta had fleets of Sunfish and Optimists racing in the harbour of Marsh Harbour. Many sailors came from Nassau bringing their boats on the fast ferry into Sandy Point.

Yelena Persaud, a student of St. Francis de Sales School in Marsh Harbour, won the Bahamas National Spelling Bee competition in Nassau on March 20. She will represent The Bahamas at the Howard Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 28.
The National Emergency Management Agency held a seminar in North Abaco to prepare a group to cope with emergencies such as hurricanes. On the final day a simulated emergency used schools students as victims. The group responded very well.
The Hope Town District Council honoured all those who have served Guana Cay, Man-O-War and Hope Town in local government since its inception in 1996. The Hon. Byran Woodside, seated center, Minister of State for Lands and Local Government, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.
